Being an Outsider

In the novel Of Mice and Men, there's a paricular character who goes by the name of Crooks. Crooks is an African-american that works at the ranch as a stable-hand. Crooks is not at all bad, he's just got an issue, his crooked back. Crooks is treated different because of both his crooked back and his most of all, his black skin tone. I for one can understand what its like to be treated differently because of skine tone.
When I was a little girl, I was made fun of for my skin tone. Unlike many people, I have a tan skin tone that's darker than everyone else that is white. From that, I am always asked if I am mixed or Mexican, which I'm not. It was pretty tough for me, for example, I didn't make friends easily. Though I was little, it still hurts in a way to think of myself as being different. Then after spending time on my grandparents' horse ranch away from people, I came to realize to embrace my tan skin tone.
Today though, I have found people that love me for who I am. They don't care that I'm different from everyone else. I am very proud of who I am inside and out. For those who don't know me very well, the outside is just the cover of the book. Just like an old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover". I have learned that you need to open a book to find out what's really happening. To those who say that you can''t fit in, just be yourself, odds are you will find people who will except you. Like me, I have found many that love my hyper and crazy, silly self and except that in me.
